Making Your Own Christmas Decorations with Crafts
One of our favorite parts of doing Christmas crafts, besides getting into the spirit of the season, is that they make wonderful Christmas decorations! These DIY projects are a fun way to allow your kids to help with the decorating.
And these crafts can save money on decorations because we got all of our supplies at the dollar store. They had a big pack of red, white, and green pom poms at the Dollar Tree that worked perfectly for this project.
Easy Enough Holiday Craft for Young Kids
We’ve seen a lot of pom pom Christmas trees that are made completely out of pom poms. But this craft was a little too challenging for my young kids, and they lost interest before it was finished. So we decided to make a simplified pom pom tree.
This version of the classic Christmas craft uses just pom pom ornaments, so little kids can out on as many or as few as they’d like.

Fun Christmas Fine Motor Skills
This holiday season you can help your child with their fine motor development simply by doing fun crafts like this! These mini pom poms are a great way to practice hand-eye coordination and build the small muscles of the hand and fingers.
Fine motor skills don’t have to be boring! Find festive crafts or activities that use smaller objects or coordination of the hands and fingers. We have a whole list of the easiest ideas here.
Start You Pom Pom Christmas Tree
First, you’ll need to gather your supplies at the local dollar store or craft store. You’ll definitely need the colored mini pom pom (we used the smaller pom poms) and glue. Then, you can decide how to make your background Christmas tree from these three options:

1. Paint a Christmas Tree
First, you can cut out a tree shape using white paper (but use heavier paper) or a paper plate and break out the green paint. This is the option my three year old son chose because he absolutely loves painting. Using paint for any art project is a perfect way to incorporate messy play, too.

As for the tree shape, we kept it pretty simple. Just cut a large triangle with a small rectangle at the bottom of the tree.
2. Use Green Construction Paper
The next option is to use green paper. This is much easier than the paint, and you only have to cut out your Christmas tree shapes. If you’re planning a larger pom pom tree as a holiday decoration, this is your best bet.

3. Use a Wooden Ornament
At the Dollar Tree, they have a whole pack of these wooden tree ornaments that you can use. If you do get the wooden ornaments, your child can paint them, too. These little ornaments also make great gifts from little kids.

Then Add the Pom Poms
After your Christmas tree background is done, all you have left is to add the pom poms! Let your child take it from here, so they can make their very own pom pom Christmas tree. Just make sure they’re using enough glue for the pom poms to stick.
If you want a star at the top of the tree, you can either add one yellow pom pom or cut out a small star from yellow paper. Then, if you’re making the ornaments, add a piece of yarn at the top once it dries. To add the yarn, you can use a hole punch or a hot glue gun if you didn’t buy the pre-cut ornaments.

Have Fun This Time of Year
The Christmas season can be very busy, so we encourage you to slow down by spending time with your kids. And a great way to do that is doing a Christmas activity or craft together! And its not about how your craft turns out, it’s all about the fun together!
