A Simple Craft for Christmas
This holiday craft is a great way to do crafts with kids of all ages this Christmas season. Even older children can make these fun Christmas trees. The whole family can have a good time doing this all together as well.

Homemade Christmas Decorations
We love having homemade holiday decorations in our home! My kids absolutely love getting to do Christmas crafts and seeing their art around the house as well as the time we spend together making the crafts. This craft is cute enough to save each year for your own Christmas decorations!
Fingerprint crafts (or hand prints) are always fun to make because they make a great keepsake. When you have little kids, these also make a great homemade gift for other family members like grandparents!
Fingerprint Crafts for Fine Motor Skills
Kids’ crafts that involve fingerprints and really finger painting in any form is great for fine motor skills. When little hands explore the paint and concentrate on making the little fingerprints, they’re building those important skills.
Step-by-Step Fingerprint Christmas Tree Painting
Here’s what you need to complete this craft:
- A canvas
- Green and brown paint for the tree
- Colored paint for the fingerprints
- Yellow star sticker (yellow paint or yellow paper with glue will also work)
- Black Sharpie
- Optional: Glitter and glue
We always recommend using washable paint for crafts with little kids.

1. Paint the Canvas
First, you’ll need to paint the background of your canvas any color you’d like. We made a light yellow, almost cream color with white paint and a two drops of yellow paint. Your kids can definitely help with this step.
2. Paint the Tree
Once the background has dried, you can use the green paint to make a basic Christmas tree shape. Then, add the tree trunk with the brown paint. If you have a little bit older kids, they can help with this step as well.
3. Add the Fingerprints
Now comes the fun part! Once the tree painting has dried, draw on some light strands with the black Sharpie. These are the lines that you’ll follow for the fingerprints from the top all the way to the bottom of the tree.
Then, add those cute fingerprints onto your tree! Try to get them close to a light strand your drew, but it’s really not a big deal if they’re not perfect. You can use all different colors or keep all your lights the same.

4. The Star on Top of the Tree
Lastly, what Christmas tree would be complete without a star on top? We found a yellow star sticker at the dollar store, but you can just as easily paint one or cut on out of paper.
5. Optional: Add Some Glitter
Glitter in our crafts is always optional because we know just the thought of glitter is stressful to a lot of adults. But if you’re feeling up to it, adding some glitter around the Christmas tree makes for a great Christmas decoration.
After all your paint has dried, use a paint brush to put clear, white glue around but not on the Christmas tree. Place your canvas on a paper plate or baking sheet and sprinkle the glitter over the canvas. Shake off the canvas over the plate or pan to catch all the extra glitter.

Tips to Make this Craft Easier with Kids of All Ages
If you’re doing this with babies or young toddlers, you’ll have to direct their fingers the whole time.
With older toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners, we recommend you next to them to help, but they can do most of the finger printing. This age does well with only one color paint out at a time. And when we’re finger painting, we like to have an extra piece of scrap paper next to the project that they can get all kinds of paint on.
