Crafts with Sensory Play

With young children, we love doing crafts that include sensory play and fine motor skills. And one of my son’s favorite materials to use for crafts and activities is shaving cream. Shaving cream is an easy way for young children to feel new textures, and you can read all about the benefits here. It’s great for young children, but also beneficial for kids of all ages!

Messy Play

Shaving cream is a great way to include messy play in crafts and activities because it’s easy to manipulate for children and easy to clean up for adults. Children have so much fun using shaving cream while getting all the benefits of messy play you can read about here!

Summer Crafts

Ice cream and ice cream cones always make me think of summer, so that’s the perfect time to try this craft. We’re breaking out our fun activities for spring and summer as the weather gets better, and that includes this ice cream cone craft! Then, when you’re eating ice cream on those hot summer days, you can do this easy summer craft to go with it!

In the preschool classroom, they do this craft as an end of year project.

Ice Cream Crafts

Most young kids know and love ice cream, so they’re pretty excited about an ice cream activity! This is the perfect activity to do outside as well if it’s nice out! And with a little food coloring, you can make all kinds of ice cream flavors with this craft.

Step-By-Step Instructions

This easy craft only requires a few supplies and has a few, simple steps. There’s also different ways to customize your ice cream, too.

Materials Needed

We found everything we needed for this craft at the local dollar store, but you can also find everything at the craft store or online. I’ll link some of the

supplies below, but use whatever works best for you.

The food coloring can be added to the shaving cream to make your favorite flavors of ice cream. Add the food coloring to the shaving cream before mixing.

Step 1: Cut Out and Glue on Cone

First, cut out a triangle from the brown construction paper either yourself or your child. After you cut out the cone, glue it onto the background paper. If you don’t have brown construction paper, you could always paint a cone with brown paint.

Step 2: Mix Up Your Paint

Next, mix the shaving cream with the glue in about equal parts. We started with about a cup and a half of shaving cream (however much you think you’ll use), and then slowly added the white glue until the mixture had a tacky texture.

Step 3: Paint on Your Ice Cream

Next, your child can paint on their own ice cream cones. The shaving cream mix will resemble puffy paint, so they can really glob it on. Because of the glue, the mix will keep its shape to resemble real ice cream.

Step 4: Add Sprinkles

Then, while the shaving cream mix is still wet, add on the sprinkles!

Step 5: Cut It Out

Lastly, once the shaving cream mix is dry, cut out around the ice cream. Again, if your child is practicing using scissors, they can help you with this as well.
