Process Art for Young Kids

These art activities are great for kids of all ages and for all of the Dr. Seuss books! They’re also great for practicing fine motor skills will making a fun craft.

What is Process Art?

Process art is open-ended art activities that don’t force kids to follow specific directions and doesn’t focus on the end product. Essentially, there’s no one correct way to do it. Kids have so much fun doing the art, and you can still get some very cute crafts out of it!

This encourages creativity, exploration, and critical thinking. You can read even more about it here.

Dr. Seuss Art Projects

Here’s some fun ideas for art that are easy enough for toddlers, but also great for older kids reading Dr. Seuss, too. And most only require simple materials and craft supplies you probably already have around.

1. Red and Blue Painting without a Brush

The first art activity is red and blue painting without a paint brush. Grab your paint and some paper, and let your child paint the paper with the bright colors however they want. And then you can even explore what happens when you mix red and blue.

Painting with other things like kitchen utensils, sponges, cotton balls, or even just hands is great for fine motor skills, creativity, and cognitive development. Younger kids love to paint in all sorts of ways, and it’s beneficial for even more of their development, too! You can read about it here

And we made our painted paper into this One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish cute craft.

2. Truffula Trees Painting

What better way to paint a Dr. Seuss Craft than with truffula trees from The Lorax? You can then use what you paint for other Dr Seuss crafts or just do the painting for fun. We ended up using our paintings to make a Lorax craft of truffula trees (a cut out circle of the painting on a colored popsicle stick).

Like the last activity, this is all about exploring with the new tool to do the painting. Young kids can paint with the trees by using it like a brush, dotting it, or (if you’re feeling like cleaning up more) splattering it.

Everything we used for this art activity, we found at the local dollar store. All you need is colored popsicle sticks, colored pom poms, glue, paper, and paint.

3. Coffee Filter Art

One of our favorite art projects is coloring coffee filters with washable markers, then spraying them with water to spread and blend the colors. It’s a super easy way to make a simple craft and practice fine motor skills with very young kids.

It’s also the perfect craft for any Dr. Seuss book because you can change the colors you’re using to match the book or cut out the finished product into something from the book.

Option one: Color the coffee filters green to make your own green eggs! We did this project when we were reading this classic book. Here’s the rest of the Green Eggs and Ham Activities we did with this project.

Option two: Color all kinds of bright colors on the coffee filters and make them into truffula trees.

Option three: Try mixing red and blue again! Red and blue go with so many of the Dr. Seuss books. And, then, you can cut out shapes to go with the different books.

4. Decorating Socks

A creative activity that goes great with the fun book Fox in Socks is decorating your own socks! Once you print out the free printable template of the sock, let your child decorate them however they want! This could mean painting, coloring, or glueing on craft supplies like pom poms, ribbons, tissue paper, or really anything you have laying around.

The point is that their socks don’t have to look any certain way. This easy craft is a wonderful way to let your child express their creativity within Dr. Seuss themed crafts.

5. Foot Painting

To go along with The Foot Book activities, we did some painting with our feet. This is one of my grandson’s favorite preschool activities, and young children always have a blast doing it. The best way to do with art activity is either outside or by covering the whole floor in rolls of paper (and always using washable paint!).

We did make these cute footprint animals, but you can also just let them stomp around in the paint. It’s a great tactile experience for young children, and a wonderful way to incorporate messy play.
