Gather Materials and Set-Up
For any painting project for young children, we like to set-up for paint assuming there will be spills and mess. First, put down a plastic table cloth (we always get a few from the dollar store) wherever you’ll be doing the painting. Then, find a paint shirt or smock for your child.
Next, gather all the necessary craft materials for this easy craft. Here’s everything we used:
- Different colors of washable paint for the butterfly’s body
- Paintbrush
- 4 x 6 Wooden frame
- 4 x 6 Card stock* (or just use the cardboard insert if it comes with the frame)
- Black marker
Finally, put some of that paint on a paper plate or a piece of tin foil and grab the paintbrush!
*You can really use any type of paper that’s thicker than printer paper, even construction paper or colored craft paper will work! But the thicker the paper, the better it holds the thick paint.
Easy Butterflies Step-By-Step Instructions
This easy butterfly craft is one that we love to do with younger children because there are so few steps. Yet they still have so much fun! And really, kids of all ages can easily do it.
1. Paint the Frame
Begin this project by having your child paint the wooden frame. This is a fun way to let your kids express themselves and use the paint color they want. Bright colors really turn this into an easy spring craft, too!
2. Paint the Butterflies
While the frame is drying, start painting your fingerprint butterflies! The younger the children, the more assistance they will need with this step. We also like to use bright colors for this step, but you can use any colors you want.
For our project, we had my grandson place two dots next to each other with his thumb for the lower wing. Then with a different color, we had him place two dots with his index finger directly above the first two dots for the upper wing. Now you have a beautiful butterfly!
You can even try different fingers for butterflies of different sizes! Young child can get a little bit carried away with the fingerprints, so you’ll want to be there to help the entire time.
3. Add the Butterfly’s Antennae, Head, and Body
Once the paint has completely dried, use the black marker to draw on the butterfly’s head, body, and antenna. Because my grandson is still pretty young, we did this step for him.
Finally, stick your painting in the frame!
