Why We Love This Handprint Flower Craft

We love making this craft with babies and toddlers all the way up to older kids because it’s such a fun craft to give as a gift or decorate your house. Using handprints in crafts is also a fun way to make a craft personal to each child. Little handprints are just the cutest, too!

Young kids also love tracing their hands. Don’t be surprised if your child asks you to keep tracing their hands long after you have enough flowers for the craft.

Perfect Craft for Mother’s Day Gift and Holidays

This easy handprint flower bouquet is a perfect craft for little hands that makes great gifts for Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, or birthdays! Handprint crafts always add a personal touch for young kids, making them such a special gift! Parents, grandparents, and teachers are much more likely to keep a craft that has a child’s handprint in it, too.

Kids of all ages can make these handprint flowers as a gift, or you can put all your kids handprints together in one big bouquet. Have each of your children use a different colored construction paper for their handprints, and then add them all together! Paper flowers like these also last indefinitely, unlike real flowers.

Materials Needed

We found all of our materials at the local dollar store, but you can find them at any craft store or online. This is everything we used:

  • Pink Construction Paper (but you can use any color or multiple colors!)
  • Green, Yellow, and Purple Pipe Cleaners (like this multicolor pack)
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue dots
  • Pencil

We tied our flowers together with a pipe cleaner ribbon, but you could also use a ribbon.

Step by Step Instructions

This is one of the few projects we love to do that needs a lot of adult help. Kids still have a good time making them, but young kids need more help than usual for our crafts. It’s still simple with very low prep.

1. Trace the Little Handprints

First, lightly hold down your child’s hand while you trace it. If older kids are doing the project, they can try to trace their non-dominant hand with their dominant hand. We did four handprints for this project, but you can do however many you want.

2. Cut Out the Handprints

Next, cut out each sweet handprint. Your child can help if they’re used to using scissors for some fine motor practice, but cutting out the little fingers can be frustrating for kids. We have a lot of tips here for helping young kids with scissors.

3. Make the Pipe Cleaner Stems

Next, take a yellow pipe cleaner and cut it into halves or thirds. Then, roll each piece around your child’s finger to make it curly. After, twist the yellow piece onto the end of a green pipe cleaner to make the stems.

4. Curl the Fingers of Each Handprint

Wrap each finger around your pencil or even an extra pipe cleaner so that they curl outward. Your child can help with this step as well.

5. Attach the Flowers to the Stems

Wrap each flower handprint around one of the pipe cleaner stems by wrapping it tighter at the bottom of the flower, so they flare out. Then, secure the flower with a tiny piece of tape or glue dot.

6. Add a Bow

Lastly, you can secure all your flowers together with a bow! We used a different colored pipe cleaner for our bouquet, but you can also use a ribbon if you have one.

Handprint Keepsake

Now, you can display or gift your beautiful handprint flowers! This is still a fun craft to do together with your kids, so try to include your child as much as possible!
