Easy Dollar Store Painted Christmas Ornaments for Kids
Looking for an easy way to make homemade Christmas ornaments with young kids this holiday season? Try our simple dollar store ornament craft (with minimal prep work!) that’s easy enough for even small toddlers.
This easy Christmas craft is a great way to include kids of all ages, too. Older kids can make them as detailed and ornate as they want while younger kids just need a little paint to finish theirs. You’ll get all kinds of unique, colorful ornaments for your Christmas tree.

Easy Christmas Ornaments
Every Christmas, we look for a few new activities and crafts to try. But with everything else going on, I try to keep it relatively simple. My kids are still too young to make any kind of glass ornaments and lose interest in any craft that’s too many steps, so these were perfect.
Great Gifts from Young Kids
These ornaments are awesome for decorating your own tree, but they also make great gifts for grandparents and other family members. My kids are so proud of themselves when they can make gifts for other people themselves. And this add a nice personal touch to anyone’s Christmas tree.
Christmas Activities for Fine Motor Skills
While this easy ornament craft provides simple fun for your kids, it’s also helping their fine motor skills. Christmas season is a great time to do some easy kids activities with small items that really help that fine motor control. We have a list of the easiest fine motor Christmas activities here.

Homemade Ornaments For Your Kids
We love doing all the Christmas time crafts and activities with the kids at our house. But because my kids are still pretty little, we have to keep it simple. This fun craft is a great way to get them involved and having a good time making their own ornaments.
Gather Your Supplies & Set-Up
These DIY ornaments are pretty simple when it comes to the supplies, and we found everything we needed at the Dollar Tree (but a craft store works, too). At the minimum you’ll need the wooden ornaments and washable paint. We grabbed different colors of paints and even one glitter paint from the dollar store. You can also add on fun decorations like pom poms, tinsel, or ribbons if you want.

For the painting part of the project, we used a plastic table cloth (also from the dollar store) or sheet, a paint shirt or smock, and some brushes. Then, just choose somewhere to paint and put their paint on a paper plate.
Painting Your Ornament
Now comes the fun part! The best part is that this easy Christmas craft really just takes this one step for your kids. Let them paint their Christmas ornaments however they want!
We do start with the paint brush for painting, but don’t be surprised if this turns into finger painting. It’s easier if you come to expect the mess, and just prepare for it in advance.

Hang Them on Your Tree
Once the paint has dried, tie the yarn that came with the ornaments onto the top of the ornament. Then, your child can hang their very own ornaments on the Christmas tree. That’s really it!
Less Stress This Christmas
These wooden ornaments are great crafts for young kids because they don’t have to turn out a certain way. Your kids can paint to their hearts desire while getting into the holiday spirit! And no matter what they look like, your kids will love seeing their work on the Christmas tree.
Most of the homemade beautiful ornaments you see on social media or Pinterest are not realistic for young children. So, don’t worry about what these handmade ornaments come out looking like when it’s about the process. Young children benefit from the messy play and creativity of making something of their own and have so much fun making them.
