Simple Letter X Crafts Preschoolers Actually Finish

Share!

Between A for apple and Z for zebra, X gets squeezed into a corner with xylophones as the only kid-friendly options. But here’s the thing: letter X crafts can still be creative, playful projects your preschooler tackles. They build fine motor skills, reinforce letter recognition, and give little hands something tangible to create while their brains absorb phonics.

Most preschool teachers skip X week or rush through it because they assume there’s nothing fun to make. But we have a great way to turn construction paper, stickers, and some glue into memorable learning moments that your child will actually enjoy. No fancy supplies, no complicated instructions, just fun things that work with wiggly attention spans.

Why We Love These Letter Crafts

Teaching letter X does not have to feel like pulling teeth since it is one of the least used letters of the alphabet. With hands-on crafts that involve treasure maps, x-rays, and textured materials, your preschooler will remember this letter long after the glue dries. These projects work because they combine movement, creativity, and hands-on learning in ways that match how little learners actually absorb information.

X Marks the Spot Treasure Map Craft

Young kids love pirates, adventure, and anything involving a big red X. What a fun way to include the letter X with hands-on activities!

This craft taps into that natural excitement while sneaking in letter recognition and storytelling skills. You are creating a treasure map where the letter X becomes the centerpiece of the entire activity. Kids get to draw islands and pathways and place a bold X to mark where treasure hides. The process involves following simple steps, using their imagination, and physically forming the shape of the letter X multiple times.

What You’ll Need

  • Brown construction paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • A black marker for the final X
  • Optional: Stickers or materials to glue on

This craft is a perfect way to be as creative as you want! They can choose any simple materials in your craft supplies to glue on as part of the map or they can draw everything.

Drawing the map elements builds spatial awareness. And that big bold X reinforces the letter shape in a context that feels like play, not school. You can extend this craft by hiding a small toy somewhere in the house and using the map for a real treasure hunt.

Easy X-Ray Craft

This craft takes the abstract concept of x-rays and turns it into a hands-on art project that teaches letter recognition, body awareness, and the idea that x-rays let us see bones inside our bodies. You are essentially creating a skeleton outline using white materials on black paper, then labeling it with a big letter X to connect the word and the image.

What You’ll Need

  • Black Construction Paper
  • White Cotton Swabs
  • Glue
  • White Crayon

To prep for this craft, you can cut the cotton swabs to different lengths and cut out an outline of the human body. Download our skeleton craft template PDF here.

Then, have your child draw a face on the cut out with the white crayons. Next, let them glue on the cotton swabs for the bones, based on an example you made or a picture of a skeleton. But accuracy is really not important for this one.

Variations of the X-Ray Craft

Sometimes you need more than one craft to fill your time or maybe your child really loved doing crafts with the cotton swabs. Here’s a few more you can try to really get the letter x with all the same supplies.

Easy X-Ray Handprint Craft

Even easier than a full body x-ray is just a handprint! This time, trace your child’s hand on the black paper with the white crayon. Then, have your child glue the cotton swabs on as the bones.

Simple X-Ray Fish Craft

For this craft, cut out a fish outline from the black paper. Then, your child can add the bones and draw the face again! Again, this does not have to be accurate at all, its just a fun craft to help learn this letter of the alphabet.

You can just draw a fish or download our PDF fish outline.

Simple Uppercase Letter X Coloring Pages

Not every craft needs to be elaborate to be effective. Coloring and using scissors are also great fine motor activities while being simple and effective for learning a new letter.

Sometimes a simple printable letter X coloring page with cutting lines gives your preschooler exactly the practice they need. Coloring builds fine motor control. Cutting along lines develops hand strength and coordination. And focusing on the shape of the letter X while doing both activities reinforces recognition in a low-pressure, high-repetition way with this quick craft.
