Easy Day 1 of Creation Craft for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Looking for an easy craft to help young children with the first day of creation? We have a simple one that even toddlers enjoy doing! There’s tons of Bible crafts out there on the later days of creation, but day one can be challenging to find ideas suited for young children.

The Story of Creation
to begin with this craft, we are usually reading through the Bible lesson of creation. In the beginning God created the light and the darkness which can be a bit confusing for toddlers and preschoolers, so it helps to see pictures in a story book. And this first day of creation craft in a great way to help young children process that.
Choose a Bible to Read Creation Day 1
Children this young probably need to read through this story a few times and even try to say it in their own words before fully understanding. You can read straight from the first chapter of Genesis or you can use a children’s Bible that paraphrases the story.
Process Art for Creation Crafts
Lots of creation craft ideas have to do with a coloring sheet or pre-made pictures, but with children this young we like to do process art. That means the look of the final product doesn’t matter. What’s important is the skills and creativity they get to practice while making the craft.

This great Bible craft is a fun way to practice fine motor skills for young children while also learning about the story of creation. Using scissors and a gluestick are great for strengthening the small muscles of the hand and fingers as well as improving hand-eye coordination.
Step-By-Step Instructions
What we love about this craft is that it’s pretty simple, and there aren’t really a lot of steps you have to follow. Once your child has the pieces they need and the glue stick, they can work independently for awhile. And like we said before, there’s no certain way the final product should look.
Craft Supplies Needed
Most of the craft supplies we used can easily be found at the local dollar store. Here’s everything we used for the project:
- White paper or card stock
- Yellow and black construction paper
- Glue stick*
- Scissors
*Note: We used a glue stick instead of a bottle of white glue, so that we could flip the paper to the other side right away without glue dripping. If you have some time to let the first side dry, you can use white glue, too.
1. Cut Out Squares and Triangles
First, you’ll cut out yellow and black squares and triangles from the construction paper. The shapes can really be anything you want, and we encourage you to let your child help with the scissors part.

If you’re nervous about letting your young child use the scissors, read about why it’s really beneficial and all our tips to help here. It’s great for many skills, especially fine motor skills, and kids have so much fun doing it.
2. Glue on the Light and the Dark
Next, on one side of the white paper, let your child glue on the yellow shapes. Encourage them to fill up the whole paper with yellow as you remind them that this is the light that God made. If your child is still pretty young, you may need to help with the glue stick.
Then, once they have enough light, turn the white paper over. Glue the black pieces onto the other side of the paper, emphasizing that there’s separate light and dark in God’s creation. Again, let your child glue their pieces wherever they want on the paper.

Young kids will have a great time filling up their paper. They really don’t need much instruction at this point.
3. Add the Bible Verse to Each Side
Lastly, you can write or print out the Bible verses about creating the light and dark. Then, have your child glue those on, too, wherever they want on the corresponding side. We paraphrased the verse for little kids.

Seven Days of Creation Craft Ideas
Creation is one of the easiest Bible stories for children this young to understand, so we usually do a craft or activity for each day. This is just the first day that can be easily added on to any other crafts for the other days.
